Kyle Adam Blair is an active solo and collaborative pianist focusing his efforts on the contemporary American piano repertoire.   While attending the University of North Carolina at Greenboro where he received a B.M. in Piano Performance under the tutelage of Dr. Andrew Willis, Blair performed in several solo recitals which included performances of works by Darius Milhaud, John Harbison, and works composed by himself.  He also performed in many collaborative recitals, working with singers of every voice type and numerous instrumentalists.  Blair’s undergraduate career culminated in a lecture-recital featuring performances of excerpts from Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians in which he rehearsed and directed the ensemble and performed on vibraphone.   Blair has twice been a performer involved in the Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice hosted by New England Conservatory and directed by Stephen Drury.   Through the SICPP program, Blair has given performances of works by Steve Reich, Kaija Saariaho, Kyong Mee Choi, John Harbison, Morton Feldman, and Charles Ives at NEC and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, MA. Blair’s research efforts include an in-depth analysis of John Adams’ Phrygian Gates, a historical and theoretical analysis of Darius Milhaud’s Le Boeuf sur le Toit and Saudades do Brasil, and an interpretation of Charles Ives’ Concord Sonata through the lens of transcendentalist philosophies and programmatic intent.  Outside of the classical music world, Blair has performed with the UNCG Spartones, a 19-man all-male a cappella ensemble, as well as numerous punk, ska, and indie bands in the Pittsburgh area.

In 2011, Blair received a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County under the tutelage of Dr. Kazuko Tanosaki.  While studying at UMBC, Blair studied both solo and chamber performance.  He also worked closely with Dr. Stuart Saunders-Smith, studying improvisation and Smith's piano works.  Academically, Blair studied the chance operations of John Cage in Music of Changes and devised his own compositional chance system using polyhedral dice sets, culminating in a set of three "Happenstances" for solo piano.

Blair is currently pursuing a Masters in Fine Arts degree from the University of California, San Diego, studying under Aleck Karis.
